Lions speak with British accents while struggling with self-identity and turbulent relationships in this enjoyable–if sometimes scientifically qustionable–live action drama. Combining documentary footage of a Tanzanian pride with tame lions and Jim Henson animation, the film tells the story of rebellious cub Suki (voiced by Kate Winslet) who wants to be a vegetarian and keep prey as pets, and her tentative brother Linus (Rupert Graves) who must learn to protect the pride. While its often cloying dialogu is aimed at young children, the 90-minute film may not hold their attention and some of the naturally violent lion life may be too much for them. Although the single lion death is discreet, there is plenty of fighting, hunting, and carcass-chomping. References to mating and nursing may also be too blunt for some parents, making it best for children ages 6 and older. –Kimberly Heinrichs

The fourth feature film written and directed by the Japanese novelist Ryu Murakami (Coin Locker Babies) revels in S&M episodes that seem to owe less to the Japanese tradition of the “pink film” than to such Euro art-bondage movies as Maitresse and A Woman in Flames. Visually, the sequnces stop well short of hard core, and emotionally they are amorphous, too, even less unsettling than standard porno fare. What ultimately saps the movie’s strength is its schematic approach to character. The loosely structured picture tags along after a timid young woman named Ai (Miho Nikaido), a recent college graduate who has found work in the big city as a hooker specializing in low-impact bondage. Ai seems less a character than a convenient object for Murakami’s flip sense of high-tech alienation. (She claims to have learned only one thing in life: “That I have no talent of any kind.”) The nonstick surfaces of her daily life, like her personality, are almost completely without distinguishing features; the only gestures she makes toward taking control are some superstitious rituals prescribed by a sidewalk fortuneteller. Ai herself is such a hazy presence that nothing that happens to her stays with us. –David Chute

Mozart’s Symphonies No. 40 and No. 28 are powerful and dramatic works in their own right. Combine a fabulous performance of these symphonies (by Barry Wordsworth and the Capella Istropolitana) with a spectacular visual tour of an Italian monastery and an Austrian city, and you’ve got a Naxos masterpiece. To the strains of Symphony No. 40 in G Minor, viewers tour the Neustift Monastery in Southern Tyrol, Italy. Breathtaking views of the outer walls, halls, immensely ornate chapel, and extensive library abound. The photography is crystal clear, the lighting superb, and the pace and path ideal. Missing completely are the bustling, noisy crowds so frequntly encountered in real-life travel. Symphony No. 28 ushers in a change of scenery, this time a look at the Austrian Tyrol’s capital city, Innsbruck. From the spectacular vista of the city landscape to an in-depth look at some of the city’s finest architecture, this is again a journey you won’t want to miss. Finally, overtures from Il re pastore, Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail, and La clemenza di Tito are paired with contemplative views of ducks at a pond’s edge and the ornate interiors and exteriors of several Austrian churches.

DVD specifics include a choice of DTS 6 channel Surround Sound, Dolby Digital Surround Sound, and Dolby Digital Stereo 2.0. Additional features include repeat and shuffle play options and previews for other Naxos offerings. Only the credits are a bit sparse. What a wonderful addition to your DVD collection! –Tami Horiuchi

Frosty’s Winter Wonderland
It’s no secret that sequls to classic TV specials rarely stack up–they’re usually guilty of getting too fancy with characters and story lines, causing irritating fissures to form in our perceptions of the originals. Lucky for a new generation of holiday viewers, that’s not the case with Frosty’s Winter Wonderland. In fact, lining up a Frosty double feature at home in which the original is directly followed by the new title is a fully cringe-free proposition, thanks mostly to the down-homey, pleasant narration of Andy Griffith and the near-perfect portrayal of the Frosty we all know and love by Jackie Vernon. The Wonderland dialogu doesn’t trouble itself with tiresome throwbacks, and even the plot isn’t overly ambitious: Frosty, lonely at the North Pole, is bent on keeping his famous promise to the kids that he’ll be back again someday, so when the news of a snowstorm in their town reaches him, he waddles off. But once the belly-whopping’s run its course, he’s lonely again. The children, hoping to salvage Frosty’s stay with them, hit upon a solution: they’ll build Frosty a wife. Crystal fits every snowman’s fantasy of a dream bride, but will jealous Jack Frost sabotage their wintry wedding? For all classic Christmas special fans who harbor hopes that the fun can continu, it’s worth finding out. Kids 2 and older will love the songs and the still-intact dribbles of silliness. –Tammy La Gorce

Twas the Night Before Christmas
Animators of all things Christmas, Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass (Frosty the Snowman) take on the famous poem by Clement Moore. Narrated by Joel Grey, the story opens on the night before Christmas, but the reading of the poem must be stopped when two creatures in the house begin to stir: family men Mr. Trundle and Father Mouse. Their restlessness stems from the fact that Santa is angry at the residents of Junctionville, returning all their letters without even opening them. The reason? Somebody wrote a letter to the editor of the paper saying that he doesn’t exist. In an attempt to fix the situation, Mr. Trundle, a clockmaker, comes up with a plan to lure Santa into town with a clock that will sing an enchanting song at midnight. When the clock doesn’t work on its first test, the townsfolk lose all faith in him. Turns out the cause of all the trouble is Albert, a book-smart young mouse who thinks he knows the truth about Santa Claus. There are a few good songs in the 23-minute program, whose the moral is: don’t believe the kids on the playground if they say that Santa doesn’t exist. –Andy Spletzer

Here are three films that couldn’t and wouldn’t have been made at any other time. Contrary to popular belief, the history of Hollywood permissiveness, what filmmakers could “get away with” on screen, is not a steadily rising graph from puritanical early days to the party-hearty present. In the early 1930s, a national mood of shock over the stock market crash and impatience with Prohibition licensed a relaxation of the movie industry’s self-censorship policies. Sexuality–always a driving force in movie plots and characterizations, even when repressed–became a more explicit presence, with costuming that sometimes pushed the envelope for exposure of epidermis and dialogu that could be shockingly blunt.

Baby Face (1933) was made at Warner Bros., the golden-age studio with the grittiest style and the most street cred. The gutsy Barbara Stanwyck stars as a young woman from a factory town who hops a boxcar to the big city and sleeps her way to the top–a progress famously indexed by a camera ascending floor by floor outside a Gotham office building as she trades up, one corporate suitor after another. No other major-studio film was more explicit about sex as a tool and a commodity, yetBaby Face is curiously less sexy than any number of movies that weren’t so outspoken about it. This TCM collection features both the theatrical-release version familiar for decades and a recently rediscovered preview version that is markedly superior, runs five minutes longer, and includes more sexual liaisons. It also happily lacks an absurd final scene that got tacked onto the release version to explain how the heroine learned to be content with a modest lifestyle.

Red-Headed Woman (1932) is arguably the raunchiest movie Jean Harlow made at MGM (though not as raunchy as her scenes in Howard Hughes’ 1930 Hell’s Angels). Unlike Stanwyck in Baby Face–a proletarian heroine grimly selling herself to beat capitalism and the patriarchy at their own game–Harlow’s character brazenly relishes both the sex and the posh life it wins for her. The lion’s share of this sardonic comedy, scripted by Anita Loos and an uncredited F. Scott Fitzgerald, focuses on Harlow’s seduction of her married boss (Chester Morris) and the havoc she wreaks in his upper-crust world. Charles Boyer has a role (his first Hollywood credit) as a French chauffeur who knows how to give satisfaction, and the film’s air of breezy ribaldry even allows the star a casual flash of bare breast.

The rarest item in the collection, the 1931 Universal version of Waterloo Bridge, has long been unseen because MGM bought the film in order to do a 1940 remake (starring Vivien Leigh) and locked the original away in the vault. Directed by James Whale the same year he did Frankenstein (1931), the picture charts the romance of a chorus-girl-turned-streetwalker (Mae Clarke) and a well-born young soldier (Kent Douglass) on brief furlough from the trenches during WWI. Apart from a zesty prelude in a London music hall and two scenes on the titular bridge, the film remains yoked to its talky theatrical source, a Robert E. Sherwood play flogging the hoary conceit that no fallen woman, however pure of heart, could be permitted to marry into a good family. Unlike the Hays Code-compliant remake, the film leaves no doubt how the heroine makes her living. –Richard T. Jameson
